Field recordings of the Ilm River in Bad Berka in Autumn season 2023 tested with the Lewitt LCT 040 small diaphragm cardioid stereo pairs in an ORTF configuration. Ambient noise is greatly reduced while subtle textures of the river are soft sounding.

The pair of cardioid microphones were placed 17 cm apart at a total angle between microphones of 110°, which results in a stereophonic pickup angle of 96° (Stereo Recording Angle, or SRA). 17 cm roughly equals the human ear distance and therefore provides the same inter-aural time difference (ITD). The two recorded channels are similar, but each have distinct time-of-arrival and sound-pressure-level information. During playback, the listener's brain uses those subtle differences in timing and sound level to triangulate the positions of the recorded objects. The art of using this stereophonic technique is referred to as ORTF stereo technique of the Office de Radiodiffusion Television Francaise (Radio France). Although the recorded signals are generally intended for playback over stereo loudspeakers, reproduction over headphones can provide remarkably good results, depending on the microphone arrangement.
